Sister Vincentia (Frances Mary) Goeb, age 85, died at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg, Maryland on November 29, 2016. She was born on September 14, 1931 in Astoria, New York, the first of three children born to Theodore and Mary (Neary) Goeb.
Sister Vincentia joined the Daughters of Charity on December 18, 1949 in Emmitsburg, Maryland. After a period of formation, she was missioned to Seton Villa in Wilmington, Delaware where she served as a group worker for children (1951-1952). In 1952 she began her teaching ministry at St. Dominic School in Baltimore, Maryland (1952-1955), and then at St. Catherine Labouré School in Wheaton, Maryland (1955-1961). The next year she studied at St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1962. Following this, she was missioned to St. Joseph High School in Petersburg, Virginia where she taught for one year. Her next two missions were as Principal at Our Lady of Peace School in Canton, Ohio (1963-1968) and Holy Cross School in Lynchburg, Virginia (1968-1974). In 1973 she earned a Master’s Degree in Administration and Supervision from Boston College. From 1974 to 1980 she served as Assistant Principal and then Principal at Elizabeth Seton High School in Bladensburg, Maryland. In 1980 Sister Vincentia returned to St. Joseph Provincial House as Education Councillor for the Province. Following nine years in Provincial leadership, she assumed the role of Assistant Principal (1989-1992) and then President (1992-1999) at Elizabeth Seton High School in Bladensburg. In 1999 Sister Vincentia became the Administrator of St. Joseph Provincial House, a position she retained until 2009. From 2009 to the present, Sister Vincentia served in Mission Integration at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore.
Sister Vincentia was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Patricia Goeb. She is survived by her brother Thomas, cousins, friends, and Sisters in Community.
A wake service will be held on Friday, December 2 at 7:00 pm in the Basilica of the National Shrine of Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Saturday, December 3 at 11:00 am in the Basilica. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sister Vincentia’s name to the Daughters of Charity, 4330 Olive Street, Saint Louis, Missouri 63108. Arrangements entrusted to the MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME in Emmitsburg.
