Glenn Carl Rosenquist, age 83, of Chevy Chase, Maryland died on Saturday, May 23, 2015 after a 17 year battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease) at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland.
He was born on August 29, 1931 in Lincoln, NE, son of the late Carl and Mable (Lundy) Rosenquist.
He attended Lincoln public schools, graduated from the University of Nebraska with a BA and married Patricia Bechan in 1953. After receiving his MD from the University of Nebraska in 1957, he interned in Philadelphia, PA (1 year), served as a physician in the US Air Force in Texas (2 years) and a pediatric resident at the University of California San Francisco (3 years), a fellow at the Carnegie Institution of Washington’s Department of Embryology in Baltimore MD (2 years) and a pediatric cardiology trainee at Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore, 2 years). Dr. Rosenquist then began a career in academic medicine that lasted until 2004—serving on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins Medical School (Baltimore, 9 years) as Chairman of Pediatrics at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (Omaha, 4 years) and as Director of Research/Scientific Director and outpatient pediatrician at the Children’s National Medical Center (Washington, D.C. 25 years).
Dr. Rosenquist was certified as a pediatrician and pediatric cardiologist by the American Board of Pediatrics, a member of 12 national medical/scientific societies, author of over 100 medical/scientific publications, editor of 2 medical/scientific books, served over 20 years as a member of or consultant for the National Institute of Health’s Human Embryology and Development study section and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha scholastic societies.
Dr. Rosenquist loved travel (visited 49 of the 50 states, 7 trips to Europe). He was always active in his church—first serving as a Sunday school teacher while a college undergraduate, twice as a councilman (total 6 years), Sunday school and Confirmation teacher (total 30 years), choir member (5 churches, total 13 years) and most recently as a Stephen Minister at St. Luke (11 years).
He is survived by his wife of 61 years Patricia Bechan Rosenquist; 6 children, Jane Rosenquist and husband Mike Condon of Chevy Chase, Dr. Peter Rosenquist and wife Debra of Augusta, GA, John Rosenquist and wife Monica of Chevy Chase, Rev. Anne Durboraw and husband Justin of Westminster, Thomas Rosenquist and wife Crystal of Los Angeles, CA, and Matthew Rosenquist and Heather Levine of Los Angeles, CA; 11 grandchildren, Stephen and wife Katherine, Gregory and Daniel Condon, Lillian and Julia Rosenquist all of Chevy Chase, Glenn, Martha, Emma and Gilbert Durboraw all of Westminster, Elsie and Axel Rosenquist both of Los Angeles; brother Bob Rosenquist of Washington state; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Ruthie and Bernie.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Luke Lutheran Church, 9100 Colesville Rd., Silver Spring, MD. Inurnment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either, St. Luke Lutheran Church (efforts to make buildings more energy efficient), Johns Hopkins Hospital Pediatric Cardiology, University of Nebraska Medical Center, or Children’s National Medical Center.
