Charles Richard Sackman

Charles Richard Sackman, age 91, of Taneytown, Maryland, died on Saturday, March 8, 2008 at his home.
Born April 3, 1916, in Chambersburg, Pa. he was the son of the late Charles William and Annie Barger Sackman. He was the husband of Waneta Senft Sackman, his wife of nearly 43 years.
In his early life he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad as did his father and brother. He also drove a truck to the Pratt Street docks in Baltimore hauling produce from there to Stoner’s Market in Chambersburg. In 1942 he enlisted in the Army and spent most of the next three years in Trinidad. He was discharged in 1945 and then worked nine years for the Veterans Administration in Little Rock, Arkansas. In 1954 he returned to the Army and spent four years in Germany. On his return to the States, he was assigned to work with the ROTC program at Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) where he spent six years. His next tour of duty was a year at Thule, Greenland. His next assignment was at Edgewood Arsenal, Edgewood, MD where he spent 21 months. He was then assigned to the Reserve Officers Training Center in Lancaster, PA. After four years there and 24 years in all, he retired from the Army July 31, 1971.
During his military career, he received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal w/Germany Clasp; also the National Defense Service Medal w/ Oak Leaf Cluster and was awarded for his marksmanship with the Expert Rifle Award.
After his military career, he drove a school bus, farmed, worked at Doughtery’s Slaughter House and then became owner/operator of the Country Kitchen in Taneytown for twelve years. After that he worked part-time for Crouse Ford Sales, Inc. in Taneytown for several years.
He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Taneytown; a 36-year member and past president of the Taneytown Lions Club where he was honored in 2004 as a Melvin Jones Fellow; and a member of Hesson-Snider American Legion Post 120 in Taneytown. He also was a member of Monocacy Lodge 203 and the Scottish Rite; a member of the Oldtimers Baseball Association and a past member and past president of the Taneytown Chamber of Commerce.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are daughters and sons-in-law Sandy and Charles Baber of Westminster, Sherri and David Sensabaugh of Taneytown, Charlene Boykin of Conway, Arkansas, Darlene and Joseph Petrullo of Deerfield Beach, Florida and Rosemary Sackman; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and three nieces and one nephew.
He was predeceased by two sisters, one brother and three nieces all of Chambersburg, Pa.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown with his pastor the Rev. Nicholas Brie officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery, Taneytown. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the funeral home.
