Wilmer LeRoy Barnes, age 91, of Taneytown, Maryland, died on Friday, December 25, 2009 peacefully at his home following an extended illness.
Born June 25, 1918 in Winfield, Maryland, he was the son of the late Howard Barnes and Minnie (Little) Gamber. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Dorothy I. (Kress) Barnes.
Wilmer was a life member of the Piney Creek Church of the Brethren in Taneytown, where he served as a Deacon. He was a veteran of W.W.II serving in the U.S. Army-Air Force and was stationed at Langley Field Air Force Base in Virginia. He was a charter member of the Carroll/Adams Riding Club, and a member of the 1918 Club.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are children, Wilmer “Lee” L. Barnes, Jr. and wife Dorothy of Seven Valleys, PA, Byron B. Barnes and wife Samorn of Gettysburg, PA; 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. He was predeceased by a daughter, Trudy C. Mills.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at the Piney Creek Church of the Brethren in Taneytown, Maryland, with Rev. Stan Diehl and Rev. Warren Eshbach co-officiating. Interment will follow at the Piney Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 7-9 PM at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown and on Wednesday from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church.
