William Henry “Bill” Riley, age 78, of New Market, MD lost his brief battle with cancer at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick, MD on Monday, February 27, 2012. Born August 28, 1933, in Petersburg, VA, he was the son of the late George Henry Riley, Jr. & Grace Thiel (nee Atkinson) Riley. He was the husband of the late Betty (nee Gorsuch) Riley.
He resided in the Catonsville area for many years, before recently relocating to New Market, MD. Bill forged many life-long relationships while serving in the United States Air Force where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was employed in various positions with AT&T in the Maryland & Washington, D.C. area for 35 years, retiring as district manager in 1987. Bill was highly regarded for his technical and leadership abilities in the communications industry. He enjoyed reading & exploring new technologies, and was an active member of the Pioneers retirement group.
Surviving are sons, John Riley & daughter-in-law, Michelle, of McLean, VA, and Donald Riley of Cockeysville, MD; his loving partner of the past 13 years, Brenda Kemp of New Market, MD; and 8 grandchildren. He was predeceased by brother, Joseph Riley.
Bill will be greatly missed by his family, loved ones & many friends. He looked upon his impending death as an adventure. As George Elliot once said, “Adventure is not outside man; it is within.” Bill, celebrate your new adventure. May you make many wonderful discoveries.
