William Eugene Mitchell, 94, of Taneytown passed away, Tuesday, October 5, 2021, peacefully surrounded by his family at Lorien Nursing Home in Taneytown. Born March 6, 1927 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late William Randolf Mitchell and Helen Mitchell, nee Stahl; beloved husband of the late Elizabeth Addie Mitchell, nee Cunningham; loving father of Carol Ann Palmer and her husband Lanny “Doc” of Taneytown; devoted grandfather of Christa Apgar and her husband Robert, Kate Irwin and her husband Thomas, and Eric Palmer and his wife Alyson; and cherished great grandfather of Robert William, Catherine, and Michael Apgar. Mr. Mitchell served proudly in the United States Army and was a WWII Veteran. He was well known around the Taneytown and the surrounding area, where he would be seen attending daily Mass and holding court at Flick’s Pub. He never meet a stranger and would strike up a conversation with anyone he passed. In his spare time, he enjoyed volunteering at St. Joseph Hospital in Towson, spending time with his family and being around other people.
The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Friday, October 8, 2021 at the MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, P.A., 136 East Baltimore Street, Taneytown (21787) with a Mass of Christian burial being celebrated 12:30 p.m., Saturday, October 9, 2021 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 44 Frederick Street, Taneytown. Interment with Military Honors will be held 1 p.m., Monday, October 11, 2021 at the Lakeview Memorial Park, 2724 Liberty Road, Sykesville (21784).
