William “Bill” M. Griffin, age 89, of Westminster, MD, died on Sunday, October 31, 2010 at his home.
Born January 28, 1921 in Baltimore, Maryland he was the son of the late John R. and Beulah (Mitchell) Griffin. He was predeceased by his 1st wife, Pearl Blevins Griffin. He is survived by his 2nd wife of 24 years, Barbara J. (Nash) Griffin.
Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Army AirForce serving during W.W.II in the Pacific Theater. He worked for a time as a payroll clerk at Koppers Co. and later as a teller with MD National Bank. He retired after many years service with the Maryland State Unemployment Division. Bill was a postcard collector, avid reader, loved watching old movies especially westerns, and enjoyed listening to jazz and big band music. He volunteered with the Carroll County Public Library for many years, and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are daughter Carolyn R. Griffin of Albuquerque, N.M., step-children Debbie Sherry and husband Rick of Punxsutawney, PA, Forrest Shaw and wife Timna of Pleasant Valley, MD, Becky Ellis and husband Sean of Westminster; grandchildren Tasha, Becky, Orion, and Megan Sherry, Hayden and Grant Shaw, Bradley and Peyton Ellis; 3 great-grandchildren; brothers Charles R. Griffin and wife Louise of New Oxford, PA, John C. Griffin of Pikesville and former spouse Pauline Griffin Kenyon of Westminster, Stanley A. Griffin and wife Judy of Ellicott City; friend and neighbor, Lee Lockard of Westminster; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Jeanette Griffin.
A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 from the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster, with the Rev. Marty Kuchma and Rev. Lucy Brady co-officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at a later date in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery Garrison Forest in Owings Mills, MD. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
