William Joseph “Billy” Atwell, 45, of Taneytown, MD, died Sunday, February 28, 2016 as the result of an automobile crash near Westminster. Born July 13, 1970 in Gettysburg, PA, he was the son of Mary Atwell of Taneytown, and Noel Atwell and his wife Julie of Westminster.
Billy did utility work for Rills Construction in Taneytown, where he was employed for many years.. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, watching football, and collecting sports memorabilia. He loved music, and was a gifted artist. He had coached his son’s football team and, more than anything, loved spending time with family and friends.
Surviving in addition to his parents, are Brenda Sands, mother of his daughter Brooke and son “Billy” Jr.; children, Brooke Nicole Atwell, her husband Ryan Turfle, and their son Jace, of New Windsor; son, William “Billy” Atwell, Jr. of New Windsor; and son, Mason E. Baker.
He is also survived by brothers, Jimmy Atwell of Westminster, Charlie Atwell of Baltimore, and Johnny Atwell of Frederick; sisters, Danielle Sims of Westminster; Evangelin Pesci and husband Luca, and their children Matteo and Alessia, of New Freedom, PA; and Michelle Atwell of Westminster; brothers, Nick Atwell, his wife Lydia, and their son Logan, of Westminster, and Adam Atwell and wife Valerie of Owings Mills.
The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD, 21787. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 4. 2016 at the funeral home with the Rev. Lloyd Fuss officiating. Interment will follow at Grace UCC Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to help defray funeral expenses may be made to the funeral home at the above address.
