Walter Junior Wakefield, 90, of Westminster, Maryland, died Friday, February 27, 2015 at Carroll Hospital Center.  Born May 9, 1924 in Garrett County, Maryland, he was the son of the late Walter and Carrie (Fike) Wakefield.  He was the husband of Auburn (Kelley) Wakefield, to whom he was married for 65 years.

Walter was a self-employed carpenter by trade.  He worked for Bethlehem Steel Corporation in Baltimore for 27 years before the steel mill closed.  He was a veteran of the United States Army, and was a member of Taneytown Baptist Church.  He enjoyed woodworking, and spending time with his beloved family.  He was quick to help anyone in need, and was always happy.  He was extremely gracious, patient, and kind, and was known by his family as a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.

Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters, Sharie Wakefield-Wase and husband Robert of Pikesville, MD, and Kathy Lynn Wakefield and husband William Wolfe of Hanover, PA; grandchildren, Melissa Manning and husband David of Winchester, VA; Alana Wase of Washington, D.C., and Frank Richter and wife Ashley of Enola, PA; great-grandchildren, Meadow and Strummer Manning; and several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by sisters, Loveda Evans, Mary Jones, and Retha Humberson, and brother, Merle Warren Wakefield.

A memorial service to celebrate Walter’s life will be announced at a later time.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home in Taneytown, MD.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Taneytown Baptist Church, 4150 Sells Mill Rd, Taneytown, MD, 21787.
