Walter Green, Jr.

Walter Messic Green, Jr., 82, of Taneytown, MD died peacefully on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loving family.  Born September 25, 1935 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Walter Messic and Louise (Trego) Green, Sr.  He was the devoted husband of Joyce (Riley) Green, to whom he was married for 61 years.

Walt was a Crane Operator for Bethlehem Steel Corporation in Baltimore for 38 years.  He was a member of Messiah United Methodist Church in Taneytown where he was active in the Men’s Group.  He was a proud veteran of the United States Army and the Golden Dragons Drill Team while stationed at the Scofield Barracks in Hawaii in the late 50s.  He participated in Carroll County Senior Softball for 15 years and Bocce Ball tournaments in Manchester for 9 years along with his wife Joyce and daughter Stephanie.  He enjoyed playing pool at the Taneytown Senior Center and was a crossword and jigsaw puzzle enthusiast.  He was an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles and the Baltimore Ravens.  More than anything, Walt loved spending time with his family.

Surviving, in addition to his beloved wife Joyce, are sons, Walter M. Green III of Lansdowne, MD and Stanley V. Green of Gettysburg, PA; daughter, Stephanie A. Garcia-Green of Hanover, PA; grandchildren, Devin Green, Keirstan Green, twins, Sidney and Bailey Garcia, Benjamin Garcia, Dominic Vairs and Charles Green; great-granddaughters, Emma and Stella Green; and several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by a sister, Shirley D. Hill.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Messiah United Methodist Church, 20 Middle St., Taneytown, MD, 21787, with the Rev. Patricia C. Dols officiating.  Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Cemetery.  The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday, January 26th at MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD.
