Virginia Ann (Wantz) Welty

September 28, 1934 — March 14, 2015

Virginia Ann Welty, 80, of Emmitsburg, Maryland left this world to join her eldest daughter, Janis, in the kingdom of heaven on Saturday, March 14, 2015.  Born September 28, 1934 in Frederick County, Maryland she was the daughter of the late John Russell Wantz, Sr. and Henrietta (Bauer) Wantz.  She was the wife of James T. Welty, Sr. her beloved husband of 61 years.

Virginia grew up in Emmitsburg, where she spent her life as a devoted wife, mother, and valued member of the community.  She ferried hundreds of local children to and from school during her nearly 20 years as an independent school bus contractor for Frederick County Public Schools.  She loved caring for her family, and enjoyed cooking, canning, traveling, hunting, and fishing.  Virginia never met a cat she didn’t like.  During her later years, she traveled extensively with her husband Jim in their RV throughout the United States and Canada.  She truly lived life to the fullest.

Surviving in addition to her husband are son, James T. Welty, Jr. and his daughter Jessica of Emmitsburg; daughter, Genevieve Hawkins and husband Paul of Pensacola, FL; daughter, Linda Prince of Williamston, SC; brothers, Jerry Wantz of Emmitsburg, Donnie Wantz of Rouzerville, PA, and Leonard and Frank Wantz of Lomira, WI; and very special sister-in-law, Jerry’s wife, Barbara Wantz of Emmitsburg.  “Meemaw” will be especially missed by her beloved 16-year-old granddaughter, Jessica, for whom she served as a mother figure and positive role model.  Virginia’s family wishes to thank the staff of St. Joseph’s Ministries for their care and support during this most difficult time.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St., Emmitsburg, MD with the Rev. James Donohue, C.R. officiating.  Interment will follow at New St. Joseph Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions in Virginia’s name may be made to one’s favorite charity.
