Thomas Charles “Tommy” Bender, age 35, of Yellow Springs, Maryland died suddenly on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 in Hagerstown. Born September 23, 1979 in Frederick, MD, he was the son of the late Thomas A. and Edna Geisler Bender. He was the husband of Sandra Crawford Bender of Frederick.
Tommy was a mason by trade and was the owner/operator of Bender Construction LLC in Frederick. He approached his masonry work as an art. He also cut and sold firewood, a business venture he inherited from his late grandfather, Charles Bender. Tommy was a jack-of-all-trades. He had a great love for the outdoors, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding dirt bikes and ATVs. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles, and owned several during his life. If it had wheels, Tommy enjoyed it – cars, trucks, track cars, and his Mud Bogger. You might say that he liked to “tear things up!” He was a great, loving, and kind-hearted man. He was a loving father, husband, and brother. He had many friends, all of whom will greatly miss him.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Hannah Bender; step-children, Brittany Crawford and Scott Crawford, Jr; siblings, Kelly Bender Shafer, Alan Bender, and Sarah Bender Bland; mother of his child, Samantha Carter; two step-grandchildren; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Charles and Evelyn Bender, maternal grandparents, Robert and June Geisler, and a niece, Cheyenne Shafer.
The family will receive friends, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Wednesday, February 11, 2015, at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St, Emmitsburg, MD. A funeral service will be held at noon with the Rev. Arthur “Pete” Baugher officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens near Frederick.
