The Rev. Roger Paul Butts

The Rev. Roger P. Butts, 81, of Hanover, PA, formerly of Finksburg, MD died on Monday, May 29, 2017 at Homewood at Plum Creek in Hanover, PA.

Born on May 17, 1936 in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of the late Roger E. and A. Olivia (Gessford) Butts.  He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Lois M. (Martin) Butts.

Roger graduated from Western Maryland College and Wesley Theological Seminary.  He became the minister at Deer Park Methodist Church and Stone Chapel Methodist Church in Reisterstown.  Following his interest in the Episcopal Church, he studied at Virginia Theological Seminary.  He became rector of Ascension and Prince of Peace Episcopal Church Rockdale, Vicar at St. Paul’s in Poplar Springs and later chaplain at Church Home and Hospital.  Next he was rector at St. Paul’s, Chestertown and retired as associate rector from Emmanuel Church in Baltimore.

Roger collected stamps of the English monarchy, and published a book in DC form using his stamps to tell the history of the British Monarchy.  He collected Academy Award winning films and enjoyed all types of music.  He also taught courses in speech, philosophy, and English at several colleges.  He was a true humanitarian.  He loved people, laughing, Irish Whiskey and was always there for friends and others in need.

Surviving in addition to his wife are sons, Jonathan P. Butts and wife Rosemarie of Parkville, MD, and Geoffrey P. Butts and wife Diane of Westminster; grandchildren, Ryan Paul Reed Butts, Benjamin C. Honeycutt, and Daniel S. Honeycutt; brother, Richard G. Butts of Everett, PA.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 2, 2017 at All Saints Episcopal Church, 890 McCosh St., Hanover, PA with the Rev. Douglas Smith as celebrant.  Burial will follow in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Upperco, MD.  The family will receive friends on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 91 Willis St., Westminster.
