Stewart L. Patterson

Stewart Lester Patterson, age 75, of Lake Heritage in Gettysburg, PA, formerly of Gamber, MD, died peacefully Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at his home under the loving care of his family and Lutheran Home Care Hospice. Born July 29, 1936 in Hanover, PA, he was the son of the late Lester Stewart and Hilda Rebecca Null Patterson. He was the husband of Rosalie Anderson Patterson, his wife of nearly 54 years. They were married Christmas Eve in 1957.

He was a 1954 graduate of Westminster Senior High School. After working on the family farm and as a gas station attendant and construction worker, he became a professional firefighter. He spent his career as a Baltimore County firefighter assigned to the Towson Station, working his way up to Fire Apparatus Driver Operator. He was affectionately known as "Strut” by his peers in the fire company. In December of 1990, upon retiring, he was honored by his supervisors and colleagues who appreciated his trustworthiness, dependability, and low-key sense of humor. He felt privileged to be a fireman who offered community service and security to his neighbors. He was one of the founding members of the Gamber Volunteer Fire Company. He was a member of Arlington Baptist Church in Baltimore since 1960 & the Westminster Bible Church in Westminster, MD, as well. In recent years, in spite of health concerns and increasing disability, he remained a kind and attentive neighbor. He enjoyed good food, friendly gatherings, travel, the family cats, spending time with family, and watching television.

Surviving in addition to his wife are son, Russell S. Patterson and wife, Joanne of Cosby, TN; daughter, Sharon R. Patterson of Gettysburg, PA; sisters, Patricia J. Patterson of Claremont, CA and Vivian Alvrus & brother-in-law, Jack of Toccoa, GA; 3 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 2 nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by brother, Gerald M. Patterson.

Stewart Patterson will be remembered as a strong, gentle and caring man and a faithful and able fireman. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 16 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 East Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD with Chaplain Daniel Summers of Lutheran Home Care & Hospice officiating. Interment will follow at Providence Cemetery in Gamber, MD. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A firefighters’ memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m.
