Sterling A. Shipley, Jr., age 91, of Westminster, Maryland, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at Carroll Hospice Dove House in Westminster.
Born on February 12, 1924 in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of the late Sterling A. Shipley, Sr. and Mary Czerwinski Feret. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy E. Clingan Shipley in 2011.
Upon graduation from Westminster High School, he entered the U.S. Navy and served during WWII in the Pacific Theater. He was retired from the State of Maryland Department of Corrections in 1987 as superintendent of maintenance, and was a master electrician. He was a life member of St. John Catholic Church in Westminster, member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, life member of V.F.W., Post #467, American Legion Post #31, Westminster Moose, and Littlestown Eagles Aerie #2226. He was a founding member of the Reese Vol. Fire Company, and enjoyed yard working and gardening.
Surviving him are children, JoAnn S. Tyler of Westminster, Sterling “Buzz” Shipley and wife Patricia of Naples, FL, Mary E. Klinger and companion Samuel Ayres of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., and Vince D. Shipley of Berlin, MD; grandchildren, Tom Fritz and wife Melinda, Joan Gursky and husband Grant, Stephanie Shipley, Rick Shipley and fiancée Rachel Pezzetta, and Alexandra Tyler; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 4, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Catholic Church, 43 Monroe St., Westminster with Rev. Msgr. James Farmer as celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Finksburg. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Carroll Hospice Dove House, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.
