Sister Angela Cool, age 94, died April 14, 2014 at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg, Maryland. She was born on May 28, 1919 in Emmitsburg. Sister Angela was the oldest of thirteen children born to George and Alice (Topper) Cool.
Sister Angela joined the Daughters of Charity on October 18, 1941 in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Her first mission was caring for children at St. Vincent’s Home in Landsdowne, Pennsylvania (1942-1947). After leaving St. Vincent’s Home, she continued to care for children in House of Providence in Syracuse, New York (1947-1952); St. Joseph’s Villa in Richmond, Virginia (1952-1965 and 1971-1977); Sarah Fisher Home in Farmington Hills, Michigan (1965-1967); and Astor Home in Rhinebeck, New York (1968-1971). From 1977-1983 she worked in the Activity Program with single mothers at Seton House in Richmond, Virginia. In 1983 Sister Angela returned to her home town of Emmitsburg to serve as Thrift Shop Manager at Seton Center (1983-1989) and then as Thrift Shop Manager at St. Matthew Mission in Spotsylvania, Virginia (1989-1990). Her next two assignments were to serve in the Activity Departments of Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg (1990-1993) and St. Elizabeth Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Baltimore, Maryland (1993-1996). While at St. Elizabeth’s she began ministering in Pastoral Care (1996-1999). This ministry of Pastoral Care continued when she moved to Our Lady Haven of Peace in Pensacola, Florida (1999-2004). In 2004 Sister Angela was missioned to Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg where she served in the Ministry of Prayer until her death.
Sister Angela is survived by brothers J. Richard and J. Seton; sisters, Mildred Sponseller, Thelma Deathrage, and Frances (George) Hemler ; nieces and nephews and her sisters in community.
She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Cletus, Allen, G. Albert, Lewis, Mary Alice Cool, Donald, and M. Louise Cool.
A wake service will be held on Monday, April 21, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the Villa Chapel in Emmitsburg. The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the Basilica of the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Emmitsburg, followed by burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
