Sister Teresa (Veronica Teresa) Buckley, age 83, died at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg, Maryland on         January 20, 2015.  She was born on March 26, 1931 in County Cork, Ireland, one of seven children born to Timothy and Catherine (Murphy) Buckley.  Sister Teresa graduated from Miss Foley’s Private School in Cork City, Ireland in 1949. After high school graduation she immigrated to the United States and received her United States citizenship in 1958.

Sister Teresa joined the Daughters of Charity on December 31, 1953 in Emmitsburg, Maryland. In 1954 she went on her first mission as a teacher at St. Mary School in Troy, New York.  Several other teaching assignments followed:  St. Pius X School in Greensboro, North Carolina (1956-1961), St. Catherine Labouré School in Wheaton, Maryland (1961-1963, 1976-1984, and 1985-1990), St. Michael School, Overlea, Maryland  (1963-1968), St. Charles Borromeo School, Pikesville, Maryland (1969-1974),  Portsmouth Elementary School in Portsmouth, Virginia (1974-1975), Queen of Peace School in Washington, D.C. (1990-1992), and St. Ann’s Infant Home (1992-2013).   In 2013, Sister Teresa was missioned to St. Michael’s Villa in Emmitsburg where she served in the ministry of prayer until her death.

In 1969 Sister Teresa received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from St. Joseph College, Emmitsburg, Maryland and in 1976 she received a Master of Science from Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania.

Sister Teresa was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.   She is survived by a brother John E. Buckley and three sisters, Kathleen Mooney, Margaret Maura Weisenberger, Phyllis (Bill) Gallagher, nieces and nephews, and her Sisters in Community.

A wake service will be held on Friday, January 23 at 7:00 pm in the Villa Chapel in Emmitsburg.  The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, January 24 at 11:00 am in the Basilica of the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Emmitsburg, followed by burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sister Teresa’s name to the Daughters of Charity, 4330 Olive Street, Saint Louis, Missouri  63108.
