Sister Maureen Delahunt

Sister Maureen Delahunt, age 86, died at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg, Maryland on January 7, 2017. She was born on May 3, 1930 in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, one of six children born to William and Sara (Donovan) Delahunt.

Sister Maureen joined the Daughters of Charity on August 11, 1961 in Emmitsburg, Maryland.  After a period of formation, she was missioned in 1964 to Astor Home in Rhinebeck, New York where she served as a Group Worker and a Nurse until 1966.  From 1966 - 1973 she ministered at Seton Institute in Baltimore, Maryland as a Nurse Supervisor.   From 1973-1975 Sister Maureen studied at Catholic University, earning her Master’s Degree in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing in 1975.   Her other missions were:  St. Vincent Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida as Director of the Mental Health Center (1975-1980); St. Vincent Infant Home in Timonium, Maryland as Nurse and Cottage Supervisor (1980-1981); De Paul Medical Center in Norfolk, Virginia as  Clinical Nurse Specialist (1981-1985); Providence Hospital in Washington, DC as the Director of Pastoral Care ((1985-1991); St. Vincent Medical Center and Riverside Hospital in Jacksonville as Minister of Pastoral Care ((1991-2005); and St. Joseph Provincial House / Bethany Community in Emmitsburg as the Basilica Sacristan (2005 - 2010).  In 2010 Sister Maureen was missioned to Villa St. Michael, Emmitsburg where she served in the Ministry of Prayer until her death.

Sister Maureen was preceded in death by her parents and four of her siblings.  She is survived by her sister Anne Provost, nieces and nephews, and her Sisters in Community.

A wake service will be held on Monday, January  9 at 7:00 pm in the Villa Chapel in Emmitsburg.   A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on January 10 at 11:00 am in the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg.   Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sister Maureen’s name to the Daughters of Charity, 4330 Olive Street, Saint Louis, Missouri  63108. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home in Emmitsburg, MD.
