Sister Mary Jean Horne

Sister Mary Jean (Mary Jean) Horne, age 87, died at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg, Maryland on May 17, 2014.  She was born on October 27, 1926 in Baltimore, Maryland.   Sister Mary Jean was one of four children born to Duncan and Mary (Zell) Horne.

Sister Mary Jean joined the Daughters of Charity on December 5, 1946 in Emmitsburg, Maryland.  Her first mission was at St. Vincent Home and School in Washington, DC where she served as a child care worker and bookkeeper from 1948 to 1951.  In 1951 she went to St. Benedict School in Greensboro, North Carolina as a teacher.  After receiving a Bachelor’s Degree from St. Joseph College, Emmitsburg in 1952, she went to Astor Home in Rhinebeck, New York as Administrative Secretary and Bookkeeper. From 1954 to 1969, Sister Mary Jean was engaged in the teaching ministry:  Holy Cross School in Lynchburg, Virginia (1954-1957); Seton Catholic High School in Endicott, New York (195701958); Utica Catholic Academy in Utica, New York (1958-1964); and Bishop England High School in Charleston, South Carolina  (1964-1969).  In 1970, Sister Mary Jean served at St. Joseph’s Provincial House as Auxiliary Personnel and then earned her Master’s Degree in 1971 at Catholic University of American.  From 1970-1983 she taught at Elizabeth Seton high School in Bladensburg.    From 1983 to 1990 she was the Coordinator of Communications at the Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg.  Her next mission was from 1990-1994 at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore where she served in the Pastoral Care Department.  The remaining assignments were in Emmitsburg:  Assistant and Bookkeeper at St. Michael Villa (1994-2000); Docent at the Seton Shrine (1998-2002), Donations Coordinator at the Seton Shrine (2002-2009); and Special Projects for the Provincialate (2009-2010).  In 2010 Sister Mary Jean entered into the Ministry of Prayer at Villa St. Michael, a ministry she held until her death.

Sister Mary Jean was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.   She is survived by a brother Roland, nieces and nephews and her Sisters in Community.

A wake service will be held on Friday, May 23 at 7:00 p.m. in the Villa Chapel in Emmitsburg.  The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, May 24 at 11:00 a.m. in the Basilica of the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Emmitsburg, followed by burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
