Sister Mary Augusta Von Drehle

Sister Mary Augusta  (Mary Augusta) Von Drehle, age 94, died February 14, 2014 at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg, Maryland.  She was born on March 13, 1919 in Washington, DC.  Sister Mary Augusta was  one of four children born to Anne Cecilia (Sandkuhler) and Clarence Bernard Von Drehle.

Sister Mary Augusta joined the Daughters of Charity on June 16, 1939 in Emmitsburg, Maryland.  She earned her bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph College, Emmitsburg and a Master’s degree from Boston College with a major in English.  She held certifications in English, Journalism, Tutoring, ESL Teaching, and Adult Literacy.   Her missions as an elementary school teacher were at St. Dominic School, Baltimore, Maryland; Cathedral Elementary, Syracuse, New York; St. Joseph School, Martinsburg, West Virginia; Immaculate Conception School, Cambridge, Massachusetts;  St. Mary School, Troy, New York; Sacred Heart School, Norfolk, Virginia; Queen of Peace School , Washington, DC; and Catherine Labouré School, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.   She taught English and Music in the following secondary schools:  Elizabeth Seton High School, Bladensburg, Maryland; Cathedral Academy, Syracuse, New York; Cardinal McCloskey High School, Albany, New York; Holy Cross High School, Lynchburg, Virginia; and Seton High School, Baltimore, Maryland.  Following her years in the classroom, she served as an Educational Director of Public Relations for Daughter of Charity Schools and as a librarian in Elizabeth Seton High School, Bladensburg.  In 1994 she became a docent at the Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.  Her next ministry was tutoring with the Literacy Council of Frederick County, Maryland.   In 2012, she began serving in the ministry of Prayer at St. Michael Villa, a ministry she held until her death.

Sister Mary Augusta was preceded in death by her parents and her three brothers.  She is survived by a sister-in-law, Shirley Von Drehle, several nieces and nephews, and her sisters in community.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the Basilica of the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Emmitsburg on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 11:00 am followed by burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sister Mary Augusta’s name to the Daughters of Charity, 4330 Olive Street, Saint Louis, Missouri  63108.
