Sister Marian (Marie Agnes) Hagner, age 91, died at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg, Maryland on September 8, 2014.  She was born on February 14, 1923 in Baltimore, Maryland.   Sister Marian was one of five children born to Joseph and Johanna (Schaeffer ) Hagner.

Sister Marian joined the Daughters of Charity on December 6, 1943 in Emmitsburg, Maryland. In 1945 she went on her first mission to St. Vincent’s Home in Cambridge, Massachusetts where she served as a child care worker and teacher until 1949. She also served as a child care worker at St. Vincent Home, Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania (1949-1953); Nazareth Home in Boston, Massachusetts (1957-1958); and Astor Home in Rhinebeck, New York (1958-1959). Several of her years were spent in the education ministry:  St. Catherine Labouré School in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (1953-1957); St. Paul School in Portsmouth, Virginia (1959-1967); and St. Joseph High School in Emmitsburg, Maryland ((1967-1970).  From 1970-1977 she served as Directress of the Seminary in Emmitsburg.  Following that assignment, she went to Elizabeth Seton High School in Bladensburg, Maryland as Guidance Counselor and Sister Servant (1977-1983).  In 1983 she returned to St. Joseph Provincial House as Administrator and Sister Servant.  After six years in that ministry, she was missioned to St. Dominic School in Baltimore to serve as Guidance Counselor and Sister Servant.  Her next assignment was Greensboro, North Carolina to minister in Pius X Parish and to serve as Sister Servant (1992-1998).  In 1998 she returned to Baltimore to work in the Pastoral Care Department of St. Agnes Hospital (1998-2003) and later assumed a position as receptionist at St. Agnes Hospital (2003-2005).  In 2005 Sister Marian was missioned to Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg, Maryland where she served in the Ministry of Prayer until her death.

In 1959 Sister Marian received her Bachelor’s Degree from St. Joseph College, Emmitsburg, Maryland and in 1965 she received a Master of Arts from Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania.

Sister Marian was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.   She is survived by a sister, Mary Magdaline Dippold, nieces and nephews, and her Sisters in Community.

A wake service will be held on Friday, September 12, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.in the Villa Chapel in Emmitsburg.  The Mass of Christian Burial will be on  Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 11:00 a.m.  in the Basilica of the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Emmitsburg, followed by burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
