Sister Beatrice (Beatrice Louise) Wise

Sister Beatrice (Beatrice Louise) Wise, age 98, died at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg, Maryland on February 26, 2015.  She was born on October 16, 1916 in St. Mary County, Maryland, one of five children born to Philip and Mary Ann (Gunning) Wise.

Sister Beatrice joined the Daughters of Charity on November 24, 1936 in Emmitsburg, Maryland. In 1937 she went on her first mission as a teacher at St. Vincent School in Detroit, Michigan.  After two years at St. Vincent School, she was missioned to St. John Home in Utica, New York where she was both a teacher and a child care worker (1939-1951).  Sister Beatrice’s next mission was as a child care worker at House of Providence in Syracuse, New York (1951-1958).  Other teaching assignments followed at St. Ambrose School in Endicott, New York (1958-1959) and Holy Cross Regional School in Lynchburg, Virginia (1059-1963).  From 1963-1966 she was principal at Our Lady of Lourdes School in Baltimore, Maryland and from 1966-1972 she served as principal at Immaculate Conception Academy in Washington, D.C.  Sister Beatrice then resumed her mission as a classroom teacher at Portsmouth Catholic High School in Portsmouth, Virginia (1972-1979) and Seton High School in Baltimore (1979-1988).  From 1988-2007 she served in Parish Ministry at St. Benedict Parish in Baltimore.  In 2007, Sister Beatrice was missioned to St. Michael’s Villa in Emmitsburg where she served in the ministry of prayer until her death.
In 1959 Sister Beatrice received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from St. Joseph College, Emmitsburg and in 1970 she received a Master of Arts from Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.

Sister Beatrice was preceded in death by her parents, her step-mother Virginia (Duke) Wise, and her siblings.   She is survived by step-brother Fred Wise and step-sister Susan (Wise) Rabenau;  nephews Michael Fox, James Jackson, Chuck Jackson;  and her Sisters in Community.

A wake service will be held on February 27, 2015 at 7:00 pm in the Villa Chapel in Emmitsburg.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on February 28, 2015 at 11:00 am in the Basilica of the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Emmitsburg, followed by burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery.  Arrangements have been entrusted to the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home in Emmitsburg.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sister Beatrice’s name to the Daughters of Charity, 4330 Olive Street, Saint Louis, Missouri  63108.
