Sister Elizabeth Ann Lingg

Sister Elizabeth Ann (Shirley Elizabeth) Lingg, age 93, died at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg, Maryland on April 12, 2025. She was born to parents, Elizabeth May (Shaffer) and William Guy Lingg on May 18, 1931, in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Before entering the Community, Sister Elizabeth Ann was a member of St. Joseph Parish in Hanover. She graduated from St. Joseph Academy in McSherrystown, Pennsylvania in 1949 and entered the Daughters of Charity in Emmitsburg on December 18, 1949. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy in 1955 from St. John’s University in Jamaica, New York and her Master of Health Care Administration in Hospital Administration from George Washington University, Washington, D.C. in 1973.

Following initial formation, Sister Elizabeth Ann began studies to become a pharmacist and in 1955 was missioned to St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida. From 1958 to 1965, she served as a Pharmacy Consultant to the Daughters’ hospitals of the East Region, living at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C. She then was missioned to Sisters of Charity Hospital in Buffalo, New York as Assistant Administrator. In 1979, Sister returned to St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Jacksonville as Administrator followed by nine years on the Provincial Council of the then Emmitsburg Province with primary responsibility for the health care ministries. In 1992, Sister Elizabeth Ann returned a third time to St. Vincent’s Medical Center to serve as Pastoral Care Director. After four years in Jacksonville, Sister served at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg as Assistant to the Sister Servant until 2002. From 2002 to 2009, Sister Elizabeth Ann was the Pastoral Care Director at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, followed by nine years at Carroll Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Washington, D.C., also serving in Pastoral Care. In 2018, Sister was missioned to Villa St. Michael for the Ministry of Prayer, a ministry she held until her death.

Sister Elizabeth Ann was preceded in death by her mother (1946) and her father (1986), and her sister, Mary C. Lingg. She is survived by her devoted brother, George Lingg and his wife Mimi, nieces, nephews; friends; and her Sisters in Community.

A Wake Service will be held on Wednesday, April 16 at 11:00 am in the Villa Chapel in Emmitsburg, followed by The Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 pm, also in the Villa Chapel. Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery on the grounds.
