Sandra Lee Ferguson

June 22, 1945 — August 19, 2024

Sharpsburg

Sandra Lee Ferguson,79, passed away on August 19th, 2024 at Commonwealth Senior Living, Hagerstown, MD after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Dementia. Born June 22nd, 1945 in Union Mills, MD, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Joseph Bankert and Dorothy Elizibeth (Hook) Bankert. She was pre-deceased by her brother, Joseph Neal Bankert. She was the loving wife of Thomas K. Ferguson, her husband of nearly 60 years.

Sandy (also known as Peach) graduated from Westminster High School, class of 1963, and from Strayer Business School (now Strayer University) in June 1964 after receiving her Legal Secretary certification. Upon graduation she began her career in the legal department of USF&G in Baltimore, MD. In 1965 she and her husband returned to Westminster where she continued her career with the Law Firm of Hoffman & Hoffman (now Hoffman, Comfort, Offutt, Scott & Halstad, LLP) specializing in real estate transactions.

After retiring from her legal career in 1989 Sandy began a second career doing volunteer work for a variety of non-profit organizations in the greater Westminster area and she took to it like a duck to water! The old saying “if you want something done, ask a busy person” is a fit description for Sandy and how she approached her volunteer role. She loved helping other people and, while she never sought or wanted recognition for her work, she received so many awards and commendations that they filled an entire wall in our family room and she was deeply touched by all of them.

Sandy’s greatest joy was her family and she cherished every moment with her grandchildren. She was a whiz at arranging family vacations to Disney World in Florida, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Tybee Island Georgia, Kiawah Island South Carolina, and Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. She delighted in the countless family gatherings over many years at the cabin. She will be so sorely missed.

Surviving in addition to her husband are her sons Michael T. Ferguson and wife Misty of Sharpsburg, MD and Steven P. Ferguson and wife Christy of Charlottesville, VA; grandchildren Joey Ferguson and wife Teresa of Burnet, TX, Sara Ferguson of San Antonio, Tx, Jack Ferguson of Richmond, VA, Kate Ferguson, Tyler Ferguson, and Sam Ferguson all of Charlottesville, VA. She is also survived by her Brother-in-law Gerald Ferguson, former sisters-in-law Jane Bankert and Ann Golueke, and her beloved Hook Family cousins.

The family extends its deep gratitude to the management and staff of Commonwealth Senior Living as well as the nurses and social workers from Washington County Hospice for their loving and compassionate care. They are truly doing God’s work.
