Samuel Francis Cool, age 89, of Taneytown, MD, died Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Glade Valley Nursing Home in Walkersville, MD, due to extended illnesses.
Born October 29, 1920 in Greenmont PA he was the son of the late John William Cool and Mary Elizabeth Ann (Riley) Cool. His wife of 60 years, Margaret Frances (Morrison) Cool, predeceased him in 2001.
Sam worked with his wife on their farm for 45 years. He was an active member of the Holy Name Society at St. Joseph’s Church in Taneytown. After his retirement he volunteered at Taneytown’s Food Sunday and while serving at Food Sunday Dad and Mom where given several Certificates of Appreciation for the work they did together.
He loved to do puzzles, all kinds of family gathering are important to him, avid gardener, and love to watch the crops he planted and the animals he raised grow and do well. Everyone will remember him having a joke to tell and willing to help anyone who needed it. He can give the weather report better than any weatherman by the signs nature showed him. On September 18, 1996 he received the Archdiocesan Medal of Honor for many years of service he did for others.
Surviving him is Son and Daughter-in-law Samuel Bernard and Catherine (Kitty) Cool of Emmitsburg, Daughter and Son-in law, Margaret Virginia and Terry William Wade of Waynesboro, Pa., Daughter and Son-in-law Mary Frances and Edward L. Stitely of Taneytown, and Son and Daughter -in-law Michael William and Betty Ruthann Cool of Taneytown; sisters Anna Lewis of Thurmont, MD, and Mary Bentz of Cascade MD; 7 grand children, 2 great grand children and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by brother’s John Riley, Frederick Edwin, Carroll Joseph, Clarence Leroy (Mike), Glenn Ignatius (Pete), George David, Robert Leo, and James William Cool; sister’s Martha Teresa Baker and Alice Jane Hurley; and grandson’s Ronald L. Baker and James Wade.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 East Baltimore St., Taneytown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, at 11 a.m. from St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 44 Frederick St., Taneytown, with Monsignor Martin E. Feild as celebrant. Interment will follow in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Taneytown, MD.
