Roy Neal Meachum, Jr., 89, of Sykesville, formerly of Frederick, MD, died peacefully on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at Constant Care at Winfield.
Born on October 18, 1928 in Monroe, LA, he was the son of the late Roy N. and Ora Lee Meachum, Sr.
Roy attended Georgetown University and served in the U.S. Army during the Berlin air lift. He was a speech writer for First Lady “Lady Bird” Johnson, and a foreign correspondent with the Washington Post. His vast career as a journalist saw him appear on both TV and Radio in the Baltimore and Washington D.C. area. He ended his career as a columnist with the Frederick News Post for 20 years. He loved traveling, watching movies, walking his dog, and was an avid reader.
Surviving are children, Thomas Meachum and wife Kari Ebeling of Westminster, Roy N. Meachum III of Washington, D.C., Susan Stonesifer and husband Rev. John Stonesifer of Silver Spring, and Michael Meachum of Alexandria, VA; and 6 grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, February 25, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. at the MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 91 Willis St., Westminster with the Rev. Kevin C. Clementson officiating. Private burial will take place at a later date in the Garrison Forest MD Veterans Cemetery in Owings Mills. The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
