Rose Marie Lusco Grill, age 96, of Taneytown, Maryland, died Monday, April 27, 2009 of natural causes at Lorien Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Taneytown.
Born March 28, 1913 in Baltimore, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Charles Thomas and Rose Marie (Catanese) Lusco. Twice widowed, she was predeceased by her first husband Matthew Perticone, and by second husband James A. Grill.
She was a communicant of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Taneytown from 1986 to the present and was a member of the Taneytown Senior Citizens Center. A retired Practical Nurse having had a most astute, caring bedside manner (for which she was honored by her superiors), Mrs. Grill served thousands of patients in old South Baltimore General Hospital, The University of Maryland, Union Memorial Hospital, Walter Reed Hospital, and Leland Memorial Hospital. She also served patients in three nursing homes while carrying on a private duty practice. She was ever ready, willing and able to nurse sick and dying family members – even if it meant losing paid work elsewhere.
Rose Grill was a loving “Family First” and “Country First” model citizen. The love and caring bestowed upon her throughout her life by loved ones and friends – and especially in her last months and weeks – give powerful witness to the greatfulness of those whose lives she kindly touched. Gifted with keen empathy and a servant’s spirit, she easily attained and maintained very close relationships with family members and friends alike.
A staunch supporter of the dignity and sacredness of all human life, she leaves a
legacy of love and caring for all. In her 80’s, though crippled and weak, she often joined her son Vincent and daughter-in-law Carolyn in public protests and letter writing campaigns, seeking restoration of legal protection for those persons yet residing in their mothers’ wombs.
Surviving are sons, Charles Matthew Perticone of Falls Church, Virginia, Vincent John Perticone and wife Carolyn Mae (Ingels); step-son William E. Grill of Maryland; a daughter-in-law, Shirley (Jarboe) Perticone; a sister Margaret Tamburo of Timonium; grandchildren, Laura Perticone Owen, R.N., Karen A. Perticone Hansberger, Gregory John Perticone, Sharon Perticone Wood, Theresa Candaleria; step-grandchildren, Christel (Marcy Rutt), Dennis and William Grill, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Brandon and Tara Perticone, Sean and Justin Snyder, Shannon and Brittany Nelson, Lauren, Nick, and Travis Candaleria. Also surviving are a host of nieces and nephews born into the Lusco, Perticone, Catanese, and Grill families.
Rose Lusco Grill was one of eleven children – two of whom died in infancy, of the remaining nine children, Mrs. Grill was predeceased by seven of them: brothers, John, Santi, Alfredo and Joseph Lusco, and her sisters Anna Salmeri, Theresa Feret, and Sister Mary Rosemarie Lusco, S.S.N.D. She was also predeceased by a son, Frank Charles Perticone.
