Roger M. Schnell, age 86, of Hampstead, Maryland, died peacefully on Thursday, September 17, 2009 surrounded by his family.
Born September 7, 1923 in Hampstead, Maryland, he was the son of the late Conrad and Rosa (Belt) Schnell. He was the devoted and loving husband of 26 years to Barbara J. (Tarr) Schnell.
Roger was a graduate of the University of Maryland, and became a teacher of history and social studies for the Baltimore Co. School System. He was a veteran of W.W.II, serving in the U.S. Army in the European Theater, and received the Purple Heart. Following his teaching career, he worked as an insurance adjuster for over thirty years with Nationwide Insurance Company. He was a lay minister at Ascension Episcopal Church in Westminster for many years, and currently was a member of St. Luke’s (Winters) Lutheran Church in New Windsor, where he taught the Adult Sunday School Class for many years. Roger loved American history, poetry, and gardening, and was an advocate for peace and social justice. He was a life long resident of Hampstead, and continued to live on the farmland that had been in his family since the Civil War.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are children, Beverly Penn and husband Marc McDaniel of Austin, Texas, David Penn and wife Laurel of New Windsor, Brian Penn of Westminster, and Steven Penn of Syracuse, N.Y.; grandchildren, Erica Bowers, Jennifer Penn, Joanna Penn, Jessica Penn, Elizabeth Penn-Wuorinen, Eli McDaniel, and Lily McDaniel; great-grandson, Dahon Saunders.
He was predeceased by a brother, Lloyd Schnell.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM, on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at St. Luke’s (Winters) Lutheran Church, Rt. 75, 701 Green Valley Road, New Windsor with his pastor the Rev. Anne C. Durboraw officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Luke’s (Winters) Lutheran Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster, and on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church.
