Robert H. “Rob’ Winfrey, age 80 of Mt. Airy, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at Lorien Assisted Living in Mt. Airy. He was born January 9, 1929 in Winston Salem, North Carolina
the son of the George Dewey and Ivel Johnson Winfrey.
He was the husband of the late Joy Margarette Winfrey who died in 1992 and Evelyn Lucile Smith Winfrey who died in 1998.
He was a U.S. Marine Corp. veteran who served during the Korea Conflict.
He was Vice-President of Industrial Relations at Vitro Labs Defense Contractor in Montgomery County. He was a graduate of Western Maryland College and was an avid and extremely accomplished woodworker who crafted magnificent pieces. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ and a former member of Westminster Kiwanis Club and Lion’s Club. He enjoyed spending time with his grandsons.
He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Mark R. and Diane Winfrey of Westminster; step-children, Edward Hering and wife, Ruth Anne of Virginia, Kathy Johnson and husband, Tim of Pennsylvania, Margie Lord and husband, Mike of Ohio and Patty Hall and husband, David of Georgia, siblings, George Winfrey of Greensboro, NC, Shirley Smith of Newark, Ohio and Lynn Swaim of Winston Salem, NC; grandsons, Samuel and Joseph Winfrey and 13 step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brother Henry Winfrey in 1997.
A funeral service will be held Saturday 11:00 A.M.
at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 17 Bond Street, Westminster with Rev. Marty Kuchma and Pastor Keith Surland officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery with military honors.
The family will receive friends Friday 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis Street, Westminster.
