Robert Lee “Bob” McGonigal, 73, of Littlestown, PA went to be with his Lord after a 10-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He passed on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born September 28, 1941 in Littlestown, he was the son of the late Thomas McGonigal and Mary Sanders Keefer. He was the husband of Rita “Pat” Cool McGonigal, to whom he was married for 50 years.
As a young man, Bob worked picking vegetables for local canning factories. He was later employed at Carroll Rubber Factory in Littlestown, Cambridge Rubber Factory in Taneytown, and Bowen-McLaughlin York Company in York, PA. During that time he served in the Army National Guard with 6 years of service. Bob began manufacturing concrete lawn ornaments and statuary, a pursuit that developed into a full-time family business. Bob and his wife Rita owned and operated McGonigals’ Lawn Ornaments in Littlestown for 40 years.
Bob was a member of Gates of Praise Worship Center in Littlestown. He loved attending church services. He was a member of the Helping Hands Singing Ministry and served the Lord ministering in song to the sick and to those in nursing homes, and served for several years as a song leader for a weekly Bible Study group. He enjoyed going out to eat, and laughing and spending time with family members, friends, and anyone else that came his way. Among his favorite activities were Black Powder shooting matches, Block Shoot shooting matches, visiting and hiking at state parks, and going to Ocean City, MD.
Surviving in addition to his wife are sons, Terry Lee McGonigal and wife Kelley of Georgetown, TX, Tony Lee McGonigal and wife Deborah of Dover, PA, and Timothy Lee McGonigal of Littlestown; brother, Donald McGonigal and wife Patsy of Hanover, PA; grandchildren, Terry Lee “TJ” McGonigal, Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA, Katherine Marie McGonigal and Jacob McGonigal of Dover, PA; three great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; four step-sisters, and a step-brother; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by son, Robert Lee McGonigal, Jr. and brother, Thomas McGonigal.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 4 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St, Taneytown, MD, with Pastor Samuel Garrett officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Littlestown. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Tuesday.
