Richard T. Weedon

July 27, 1925 — January 4, 2011

Mr. Richard Thomas Weedon departed this life on January 4, 2011. He died peacefully at home. He was the beloved husband of Mrs. Barbara VanBrakle Weedon to whom he has been married for 34 years. His first wife, Mildred Weedon predeceased him in 1975.
Dick, as many people called him, was the son of the late Joseph Albert and Daisy Mary Woods Weedon. He was born July 27, 1925 in Sunnyside, Maryland and was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Dawson, Joseph, Charles Lee, Robert and Eugene Weedon and two sisters Calista Hackey and Anna Weedon. Dick retired in 1980 after 30 years of employment at Ft. Detrick, Maryland. After his retirement Dick’s backyard was a welcoming sanctuary for every bird, squirrel, duck, rabbit and every other hungry animal in the neighborhood. Dick also served his country with pride during World War II, serving with the United States Navy which he often spoke of fondly. He was proud to have his World War II “caps” in the back of his car.
Dick was a life-long Catholic. He was a long-time member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Emmitsburg. He was extremely honored when he was selected to become a member of the local chapter of the Knights of Columbus. This was a particularly proud accomplishment for him as he was the first African American member of the Knights of Columbus in the State of Maryland. He also thoroughly enjoyed looking for antique furniture and repairing and refinishing it.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Weedon, two children from his first marriage, Mary Teresa Weedon and Drusilla Mae Weedon, a grandson, Richard Terance Weedon, and a great-grand daughter, Niya Weedon, sisters Catherine C. Sappington of Bartonsville, Maryland and Agnes B. Smallwood of Petersville, Maryland, and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews and many cousins and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 47 DePaul St, Emmitsburg with Reverend Stephen Trzecieski, C.M., officiating. Burial will follow in Emmitsburg Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at the church.
