Richard Koontz, age 89, of Taneytown died peacefully Friday, March 25, 2022 at Lorien Assisted Living. Born June 8, 1932 in Taneytown, he was the son of the late Vernon Leroy and Anna Grace (Crabbs) Koontz. He was the devoted husband, of 68 years, to Romaine E. (Feeser) Koontz.
A graduate of Taneytown High School and veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War, Richard spent 32 years with the U.S. Postal Service in Taneytown, retiring in 1994. An active member at St. Joseph Catholic Church, he served with the Holy Name Society, achieving Man of the Year designation for the Baltimore Archdiocese. Also a very active member of the Taneytown Lions Club, he received the Melvin Jones Award for Outstanding Service.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are son, Michael R. Koontz (Winnie) of Ellicott City; grandchildren, Justin M. Koontz (Rachel) of Conifer, CO, Kathleen Levendusky-McDonough (Shawn) of Williamsburg, VA; son-in-law, Ron Levendusky, of Ellicott City; sister, Shirley Shaffer, of New Oxford, PA; and two nephews Randy and Todd (Stephanie) Shaffer. Richard was predeceased by a daughter, Teresa Koontz Levendusky and a brother, Bernard K. Koontz.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 27, 2022, from 6-8 p.m. at MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME P.A. in Taneytown. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2022 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Taneytown . Burial will follow at Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Those who wish may donate in Richard’s name to a charity of their choice.
