Dr. Richard Kelley, age 59, of Emmitsburg, Maryland, died unexpectedly on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at his home.
He was born in Camden, NJ, the son of the late John J. and Helen E. (Barry) Kelley. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Helen (Cassidy). Surviving in addition to his wife are sons, Kevin Kelley of Emmitsburg and Patrick Kelley of Philadelphia; daughter, Katherine Kelley of Norfolk, VA.; sister, Eileen Turner and husband Doug of Ocean View, NJ and brother, John “Barry” Kelley of Ocean View, NJ; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Rich was a faith-filled communicant of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Emmitsburg and a member of the Emmitsburg Lions Club. He especially enjoyed skiing and spending time with family and friends.
Dr. Kelley received his degree in dentistry from Fairleigh-Dickinson University and completed an oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Georgetown University Medical Center. Rich was a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and he practiced as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Frederick County for the past 29 years. Rich was a Fellow with the American College of Dentists and International College of Dentists. He was also an active member of the Maryland State Dental Association, the Maryland Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the Frederick County Dental Society. He held positions of office for many of these organizations, and he was recently awarded the Maryland State Dental Association Distinguished Service Award.
Viewing and Mass will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 47 DePaul St., Emmitsburg, MD. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2014, in the church sanctuary, with prayers led by Deacon John Hawkins beginning at 7:15 PM. Visitation will continue on Wednesday beginning at 10 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM, with the Rev. Frank Sacks, C.M. and Rev. Vincent O’Malley, C.M. as concelebrants. A private burial will be held at a later date.
