The Reverend Marton James “Marty” Roberson, age 57 of Hampstead, died Wednesday December 17, 2008 at his home. He was born August 22, 1951 in Fullerton, CA. the son of Marilynn J. Johnson Roberson of Easley, SC and the late Elton Lee Roberson. He was the husband of Cheryl W. Miller Roberson, his wife of 24 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a 1969 graduate of Smithsburg High School in Smithsburg, MD and a 1976 graduate of the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho. He graduated in 1999 from Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary. He served as a pastor at Port Royal Lutheran Parish in Port Royal, PA and Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Williamsport, MD. He was currently serving as pastor at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Westminster, MD. Prior to entering the ministry, he was a sales manager at Wantz Distributors in Hagerstown, MD. He was a former president of Smithsburg Athletic Boosters. He enjoyed NASCAR, ship cruising and loved to cook. He loved being a Pop Pop and adored his grandsons. He enjoyed watching and supporting his children in sports activities. He loved serving the Lord.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by children and spouses, Devon C. and Melissa Roberson of Harrisburg, PA, Julie C. and Jim Lovelace of Leesburg, GA, W. Theodore “Ted” III and Rebecca Spaeth of Hagerstown, MD and Jeffrey L. and Nicole Spaeth of Midlothian, VA; siblings, Daniel H. Roberson of Tennessee, Nannette M. Underwood of Easley, SC and Bryon T. Roberson of cascade, MD; grandsons, Chance T. Spaeth and Jax J. Spaeth.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, 3:30 P.M. at St. John’s (Leisters) Evangelical Lutheran Church, 827 Leisters Church Road, Westminster with Rev. Chad Kline and Bishop H. Gerard Knoche co-officiating. Graveside will be private in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown, MD.
The family will receive friends Saturday 1:00 to 4:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM and Sunday 1:00 to 3:00 PM at St. John’s (Leisters) Evangelical Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall in Westminster, MD. A memorial service will be held Monday 1:00 PM at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Williamsport, MD with Rev. W. Gregory Martin officiating.
