The Rev. Kenneth E. Morelock, of East Point, Ga., died Friday, Oct. 31, 2008.
Born in Taneytown, he was the son of the late Edward and Rheba Morelock. He was the husband of Patricia A. Weigle.
He was a graduate of Gettysburg College and Seminary in Gettysburg, Pa. He was an ordained Lutheran Minister (LCA/ELCA) and served at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran in Frostburg, First United Lutheran in Memphis, Tenn., Holy Cross Lutheran in Athens, Ga., Emmanuel Lutheran in Atlanta, Ga., Gloria Dei in Lithonia, Ga., and the Lutheran church in Wellersburg, Pa. He was also an interim pastor at Keyser, W.Va., and lastly he was visitation pastor for the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Atlanta.
He was named to the National Association of Black Lutheran Ministers and was the first Caucasian Black Lutheran minister in Georgia. He served on committees at all of his parishes, supporting the communities and helping others. He had married 357 couples, officiated at the burial of 192 individuals and had baptized 230 people. He was known for his sermons and his voice which carried without the need of a microphone.
In addition to pastoring he worked with students at Frostburg State College, and Morehouse, Clarke and Spelman Colleges.
He had welcomed his mother-in-law in his home for 37 years, his father for his last seven years and his wife's aunt for her last three months.
He enjoyed music and was an avid supporter of choirs, musicians and soloists. He enjoyed spending time with his animals and especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He also enjoyed traveling and was an avid reader and gardener.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are children and spouses Vicki Morelock of Snellville, Ga., Kendra and David McCoy of Cornelia, Ga., Lynne Morelock-Roy and Robert Bingham-Roy of Stone Mountain, Ga., Mark and Linda Morelock of Columbia, and Albert and Rhonda Morelock of Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren Ryan, David, Joshua, Daniel and Christina McCoy, Althea and Ian Roy, Kim and Kelly Whittaker, Kinsey, Trevor, Corey and Cameron Morelock, and spouses Carla and Tiffany McCoy; great-grandchildren Zachariah, Landon and Lexis McCoy; niece and nephew Karen and John Weigle of Baltimore; and friend Danielle Brown.
The service in Georgia is at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 731 Peachtree St., East Point.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home in East Point.
The graveside service in Maryland will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery in Taneytown, with the Rev. Nicholas Brie officiating.
