Rev. Gladys Clare Sloane

Rev. Gladys C. Sloane, age 89, of Emmitsburg, Maryland, died of lung cancer on Friday, May 24, 2013 at the York Hospital in York, Pennsylvania.
Born on July 29, 1923 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, she was the oldest daughter of the late William M. Dill and Mabel Clare (nee Miller) Dill. She was predeceased by her husband Jeremiah P. Sloane in 1975.
She lived in Johnstown until she left to attend the University of Pittsburgh Nursing School in 1943, graduating in 1945. While she was still in Nursing School, she joined the Navy Marine Nurses Corp. She ended her nursing career to marry her husband Jeremiah in 1949 and raise their 5 children. Following the death of her husband, she attended University of Maryland, and Wesley Theological Seminary. She graduated and was ordained a Methodist minister. Her first pastoral ministry post was to the Central and Fairview United Methodist Churches in Cumberland, Maryland; and her final posting was to the Trinity United Methodist Church in Emmitsburg, Maryland, where she retired and lived until her passing.
Surviving her are children, Elizabeth Sloane of Emmitsburg, Kathleen Steed of Crofton, Charles Sloane of Boyds, Christina Callahan of Mechanicsville, and Eric Sloane of Emmitsburg; sister, Leora Krise of Bulgaria; 20 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a sister, Naomi Ruth Bowser.
Memorial services will be held at 3 pm on June 8, 2013 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Emmitsburg with Rev. Dr. Wade Martin officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 1, 2013 from 6-9 pm at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St., Emmitsburg.
