Raymond Long, Jr., 80, a resident of the Carroll Vista Community in Taneytown, MD, died on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, MD. Born September 25, 1936 in Northfield, VT, he was the son of the late Raymond and Lizzie O’Day Long, Sr. He was the devoted husband of Marsha Long, to whom he was married for 33 years.
Ray served for 26 years in the United States Army’s 25th Infantry Division, where he attained the rank of Major, and received numerous outstanding service awards. Upon retirement from the military, he served 18 years as Transportation and Grounds Manager at Towson University. Ray was an avid fan of the Baltimore Ravens. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing golf, collecting guns, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters, Andrea Jackson of Fayetteville, NC, and Michelle Morin of Pasadena, MD; step-son, Kenneth Barkley of Wasilla, AK; step-daughter, Shari Green and husband Richard of Westminster, MD; brother, Douglass Long and wife Helen of Barre, VT; grandchildren, Amber and Andrew Rhoades, Meaghan and Taylor Morin, Joseph Barkley and wife Emily, Melissa Larsen and husband Kile, Shannon Green, and Heather Fitzpatrick and husband Ben; great-grandchildren, Dominic, Grace, Tracer, and Hailey; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, January 13, 2017 at MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD, with Celebrant John Morrill officiating. Interment will follow at Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
