Paul R. Dutterer, 82, of Westminster, died Thursday evening, May 28, 2015, at Carroll Hospice Dove House after an extended illness.
Born October 3, 1932 in the Westminster home where he has lived his entire life, he was the son of the late Stewart Nevin and Edna Ruthrauff Dutterer. He was the husband of C. Louise Wagner Dutterer, to whom he was married for 63 years.
Paul was a 1952 graduate of Westminster High School and worked in the family business, Dutterer’s Flower Shop. As a young boy he had a model and hobby shop located in the flower shop. He started his mechanical building experience by building his sister Eileen’s first car. He also owned and operated Westminster Coal Company. He was involved with Circle Track Racing, starting with Lincoln Speedway, Williams Grove Speedway and Dorsey. He then began Drag Racing, mostly at Mason-Dixon and 75-80 Dragway. He was mechanically inclined, building and replacing motors and transmissions on all of his race cars. He also built his own race cars---“Iron Thunder”, “Little Thunder” and “Black Betty” from the ground up. Racing weekends were spent with family and friends---cook-outs and memories.
Surviving him in addition to his wife are daughters, Karen J. Proctor and husband, Ronnie, of Harpers Ferry, WV, Teresa L. Oster and husband, Fran, of Hanover, PA and John P. Dutterer and wife, Amy, of Glen Burnie; sister, Eileen Gist and husband, Ken, of New Windsor; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Nevin S. Dutterer.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 from the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St, Westminster, MD with Pastor Derick Amsler officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Memorial Gardens, Sykesville. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM.
