The Rev. Garland Pollard “Gary” Morgan II, age 64 of Thurmont, died peacefully Thursday, February 27, 2014 at his home. Born August 31, 1949 in Danville, VA, he was the son of Dorothy Jones Morgan of Orlando, FL and the late Garland P. Morgan I. He was the husband of Gladys Mae Porter Morgan, to whom he was married for almost 40 years.
Gary was the pastor of Thurmont United Methodist Church where he had served for the past 7 years. He previously served the Hyattstown United Methodist Church in Hyattstown, MD for 6 years. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He spent 27 years with the Prince George’s County Police Department where he served as captain in Special Operations and as S.W.A.T. Team leader. During his younger years he was a volunteer fire fighter. He played guitar and bagpipes and was co-founder of the Prince George’s County Police Bagpipe Band. Gary enjoyed singing, reading, collecting books, preaching, and spending time with his family. During his theological studies he learned both Hebrew and Greek.
Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are son, Pastor Douglas Mixer and wife Mona of Odenton; daughters, Jennifer Garcia and husband Jason of Annapolis, and Brianne Morgan of Hanover, MD; brother, Jeffrey Morgan and wife Simone of Las Vegas, NV; grandchildren, Zachary and Hannah Mixer, and Gavin, Cameron, and Peyton Bargar; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by granddaughters, Kaylee Grace Bargar and Morgan Hope Garcia.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8 at Thurmont United Methodist Church, 13880 Long Rd, Thurmont, MD with the Rev. Lew Schrumm, pastor of Mid-Atlantic Community Church in Crofton officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St., Emmitsburg, MD.
