Neil Dayhoff Hawk, age 71, of Taneytown, Maryland died on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at his home in Taneytown, following a brief illness. Born April 28, 1940 in Gettysburg, PA, he was the son of the late Glen Nelson and Dorothy Lee Dayhoff Hawk. He was the husband of Connie Marie Hawk, his wife of 49 years.
He was a 1958 graduate of Westminster High School. During his high school years, he worked as an usher at both the State and Carroll Theaters in Westminster. Other jobs during his younger years included multiple morning, evening and Sunday newspaper routes in the Westminster area. He was subsequently employed by Taney Lumber & Supply in Taneytown, Ryland Homes in New Windsor, and FMS in Westminster. Most recently, he was a commercial sales specialist for Lowe’s of Westminster where he worked during the past 19 years. Neil was often referred to as “Mr. Lowe’s” by many customers & friends. He was well-know throughout the area for his knowledge, skill and creative woodworking.
He was a member of Grace United Church of Christ in Taneytown and was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving from 1958 to 1962. During his service in the military, he received several awards & commendations. He enjoyed his woodworking shop, western movies (especially those starring John Wayne,) and spending time with his grandchildren & his dog, Casper.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughter & son-in-law, Julie L. & Commander Douglas A. McGoff of Fredericksburg, VA; son, Neil David Hawk of Taneytown; grandchildren, Bethany, Meredith and Adam McGoff, and Joshua D. Hawk; sisters & brother-in-law, Sandra H. Parker, and Judith H. & Darryl Seipp, all of Westminster; sisters-in-law & brothers-in law, Lt. Colonel (Retired) Charles M. & Olga Cock of Weslaco, TX, the Rev. Dr. Laura Lee & 1st Lt., MSP (Retired)Ralph H. Morgan of Littlestown, PA, and Chaplain (Colonel, Retired) Joel W. & R. Kay Cocklin of Findlay, OH; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by father-in-law, the Rev. Joel W. Cock, mother-in-law, Blanche G. Cock, and brother-in-law, Robert R. Parker.
A celebration of Neil’s life will be held 7 p.m. Saturday, November 26, 2011 at Grace United Church of Christ, 49 West Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD. His pastor, the Rev. Steven Ostendorf-Snell, sister-in-law, the Rev. Dr. Laura Lee Morgan, and brother-in-law, Chaplain (Colonel, Retired) Joel W. Cocklin will co-officiate. There will be no public viewing. Interment will be private in Grace U.C.C. Cemetery in Taneytown. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parish hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD, 21157. Arrangements are by the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home in Taneytown, Maryland.
