Miriam Augusta Welty, 89, of Emmitsburg, Maryland died peacefully on Monday, December 22, 2014 at St. Catherine Nursing Center in Emmitsburg.  Born December 23, 1924 in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Alice Byrd Reed Sandkuhler.  She was the wife of Joseph Norman Welty, to whom she was married for 66 years.

Miriam, along with her husband, owned and operated the former Welty’s Meat Market in Emmitsburg for more than 25 years.  Together they managed several rental properties in the area for more than 40 years.  She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, watching soap operas, sewing, crocheting, working on craft projects, and spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to her husband are daughters, Yvonne Harbaugh of Fairfield, PA, and Cynthia Knoepfel and husband Duane of Ocean View, DE; sons, Joseph Welty and wife Jan of Frederick, and Vincent Welty and wife Rosemary of Thurmont; grandchildren, Meredith, Joseph, and Olivia Welty, Travis Martin, and Wade Harbaugh; and great-granddaughter, Atley Harbaugh.  She was predeceased by sisters, Rita, Loretta, Doris, and Angela, and brother, Francis.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 26 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 47 DePaul St, Emmitsburg, MD with the Rev. Charles F. Krieg, C.M. as celebrant.  Interment will follow at New St. Joseph Cemetery.  There will be no visitation or viewing.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home in Emmitsburg.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 108 Byte Dr, Frederick, MD, 21702, or to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Foundation, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, TX, 75265.
