Mildred Ohler Ecker, 90, of Hampstead, MD passed away peacefully on Monday, January 14, 2019 at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster. Born October 9, 1928 in Taneytown, she was the daughter of the late Raymond James and Emma Savilla (Clutz) Ohler. She was the devoted wife of Owen Mildren Ecker, Sr., to whom she was married for 71 years.
Mildred was a graduate of Taneytown High School, class of ’45. She earned degrees in Math and Biology at Western Maryland College, where she graduated with the class of ‘48. She was a math teacher in the Carroll County Public Schools for 34 years. She taught at Hampstead and North Carroll and coached girls’ sports at Hampstead. She went on to tutor additional students for many years after her retirement. She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Taneytown. Mildred enjoyed going to model train shows and creating scenery for the family’s model train layout. She also enjoyed crocheting, solving Sudoku puzzles, tending to the family cats and spending time with family.
Surviving, in addition to her beloved husband Owen, are her son, Owen Mildren Ecker, Jr. and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by all four of her sisters, Virginia Baumgardner, Marian Formwalt, Ruth Jean Sell and Lois Wantz.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD with the Rev. David Schafer officiating. Burial will follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
