Mildred S. Alexander, age 89, of Taneytown, Maryland, died peacefully on Friday, October 18, 2013 at St. Catherine Nursing Center in Emmitsburg.
Born on March 4, 1924 in Howard County, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Fulton and Burnice (Barnes) Slagle. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Henry H. Alexander.
Mildred was a teacher with the Carroll County Public School System and taught for her entire career at Taneytown Elementary School until her retirement in 1983. She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Taneytown, the Retired Maryland State Teachers Association, and the Taneytown Republican Womens Club.
Surviving in addition to her husband are son, Henry H. Alexander, Jr. and wife Patricia of Thurmont; daughters, Joan Shry and husband Hobson of Woodbine and Carol Horton of Taneytown; grandchildren, Kelly Alexander, Scott Alexander and wife Carrie, Jeremy Shry and wife Shannon, and Kimberly Horton; sisters-in-law, Mary Slagle of Mt. Airy, Blanche Slagle of Baltimore, and Dorothy Bickley of Falls Church, VA; brother-in-law, Andrew Alexander of Austin, TX; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by brothers, Fred, Millard, and Benjamin Slagle.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown with Pastor Rachel Semovoski officiating. Interment will follow in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Taneytown. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 22nd from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
