Meredith E. Gross

Meredith Eugene Gross, age 79, of Taneytown died peacefully at his home on Monday, July 2, 2012. Born October 4, 1932 in Walkersville, he was the son of the late Leslie Guy and Elsie Grace Heffner Gross. He was the wife of Betty Jean Gross to whom he was married for over 59 years.


Meredith was a life member of the Taneytown Volunteer Fire Company, serving in many different capacities over the years, including Assistant Chief, Trustee, and member of the Fire Police. He was also a former member of the Carroll County Fire Chiefs’ Association & Firemen’s Association, as well as the Cumberland Valley Firemen’s Association. He was a charter member of the Men’s Auxiliary to Monocacy Valley VFW Memorial Post 6918 and was a member of Emmanuel Baust United Church of Christ. Meredith was a master electrician, having worked at Cambridge Rubber Company in Taneytown, the Rotorex Company in Walkersville, and the Carroll County Board of Education, from which he retired. He enjoyed spending time at the river with family and friends.


Surviving in addition to his wife are son, Douglas Gross and wife, Nita, of Gettysburg, PA; daughters, Sandra Gross and partner, Paul Patel, of Damascus, Sharon Gross and husband, Christopher Jordan, of Bethesda, and Shelly Boone and husband, Eric, of Westminster; grandsons, Timothy Gross, Owen Boone, and Alexander Jordan; granddaughter, Sabrina Staas; great-grandson, William Gross; and numerous nieces and nephews. As the last surviving member of his family, he was predeceased by 9 sisters, Mary Harrison, Dorothy Wentzel, Mildred Virts, Doris Gross, Katherine Kramer, Betty Royer, Margaret Malone, Helen Lightner, and Evelyn Pickett; and 7 brothers, Austin, Elwood, Wilbur, Donald, Carroll, Guy, and Walter Gross.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 6 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD with Deacon Charles E. Barnhart, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Finksburg. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Friday. A Fireman’s memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
