Melvin A. Pennell, Jr., 96, of Westminster passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at Lookabout Manor Senior Living. Born April 10, 1928 in Cumberland, Maryland, he was the son of the late Melvin A. Pennell, Sr., and Mary Catherine Pennell. He was the last of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Jane Pennell, in May of 2018.
Melvin’s profession was a commercial artist. He painted billboards all over Baltimore City and surrounding counties. For many years, he painted the billboards at Memorial Stadium and Camden Yards prior to opening day. He graduated from Maryland Art Institute in the 1950’s and was an avid artist, painting in oils and watercolor for the rest of his life. His specialty was animals and horses. Most important to Melvin was his family. Orphaned at a young age, he loved having all the family around, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had a witty sense of humor and could always make you laugh. He will be greatly missed.
Melvin is survived by daughters Karen Flickinger and husband Blaine of New Windsor and Gail Pennell of Frederick; grandchildren, Jason Dilley and wife Tammy of Littlestown, Ashley Head and husband Brian of Westminster, and Tommy McCauley of Littlestown; and
great-grandchildren, Makayla, Brayden, Olivia and Lily.
