Melvin Irving Amoss

Melvin Irving Amoss, 81, of Thurmont, formerly of Taneytown, Maryland died Friday, January 28, 2011 at The Genesis Healthcare Center in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania following a short but fierce battle with MDS. Born November 28, 1929 in Sykesville, Maryland, he was the son of the late William and Elizabeth (Hurt) Amoss. He was the husband of the late Betty Lee Ausherman Amoss who died in 1997.
He was a truck driver for both RH Crawford and Zentz Trucking. He entered the United States Air Force in 1946 where he served as a crew chief with the 448th Bomber Wing. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He was honorably discharged from duty in 1953. He was affiliated with the United Methodist Church, American Legion Hesson Snider Post 120 in Taneytown and the Harney VFW.
He enjoyed flying, tinkering with motors, lawnwork and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid CB radio operator with the proud handle “The Agitator.”
Surviving are daughter Karen Lee Chiaruttini and husband Timothy of Taneytown; son, Melvin Wayne Amoss & Diane of Williamsport, PA; grandchildren, Laryssa Doody and husband Keith of Thurmont, Jordan Chiaruttini and wife Miriam of Hanover, PA, Donald M. Chiaruttini of Baltimore, Luke Amoss of Littlestown, & Christy Claybaugh and husband Charlie of Littlestown; 11 great-grandchildren, Justice, Jaydon, Tara, Becky, Brandon, Ava, Addison, Braydon, Taylor, Austin & Kyle; great-great grandchild, Nathaniel Stonesifer; brothers, George Amoss and wife Theo of Westminster, and Calvin Amoss and wife Carol of Taneytown; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 1, at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 East Baltimore St, Taneytown, Maryland with the Rev. Jeffrey Blaylock officiating. Interment will follow in Keysville Union Cemetery, Keysville, Maryland. The family will receive friends from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
