Maxine Roberta (Hess) Dixon

December 18, 1921 — June 2, 2014

Maxine Roberta (Hess) Dixon, 92, of Taneytown, died Monday, June 2, 2014, at Carroll Hospice’s Dove House in Westminster.  Born December 18, 1921 in Carroll County, she was the eldest daughter of the late Wilbert and Marie Hilderbrick Hess. In 1942, she was united in marriage to Howard Duane Dixon, her husband of more than 71 years.

Maxine graduated from Taneytown High School and Marinella Beauty School in Baltimore, MD and worked as a beautician in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties.  She was blessed with three children, Robert, Steven, and Lynn, whom she raised in Adelphi, MD.

She loved music, singing soprano with her sisters and in various church choirs in Bethesda, Silver Spring, and Taneytown, MD.  Along with her husband, Duane, she was a charter member of Abiding Presence Lutheran Church in Beltsville and in retirement a very active member in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Taneytown.

In addition to music, she was a member and past president of the Silver Fancy Garden Club.  She loved working in her flower garden at home.  She enjoyed visiting with nursing home residents, performing “garden therapy”.  Maxine was instrumental in starting the “Sing Along” for the seniors at Carroll Lutheran Village, Westminster, Md, participating in that endeavor for twenty years.

Surviving Maxine are sons and daughters-in-law Robert D. and Diana Dixon, of New Windsor, Md. and Steven B. and Suzanne Dixon of Laurel, Md.; daughter Lynn and son-in-law Abraham Orbach of Hilton Head, S.C.; grandsons Ryan Dixon, of Frederick, and Randy Dixon and wife Christina, of Westminster; granddaughters Denelle Dixon, of Gaithersburg, Helena and Nati Orbach of Chicago Ill., and Sharon and husband Andrew Wietstock , of San Francisco, Calif.; and sisters Louise Grier, of Forest Hill, Estelle Null and husband George, of Oxford, Pa.
She was predeceased by her husband, Howard Duane, a month and a half previously, her sister Ruth Head and husband George, and sisters-in-law and their husbands Hannah and Ross Varnum, and Aliene and Robert McDaniel.

On Friday, June 6, the family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until the time of the service, 6 p.m. at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 38 W. Baltimore St, Taneytown, with the Rev. Stacy Marsh officiating.  Inurnment will follow in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery.  Light refreshments will be served in the church social hall following the services.
