Mary Vooz. Zimmerman, 89, of Sykesville, Maryland, formally from Frostburg, passed away on February 9, 2009.
Mary Zimmerman was born on June 11, 1919 in Allentown PA, the daughter of Phillip E and Bertha K Vooz. She was a graduate of Kutztown State College, class of 1939 with a degree in Library Science. She received her Masters degree in Management Science in 1977 from Frostburg State College. She also studied at Simmons College in Boston, Lehigh University in Bethlehem PA, and the College of Librarianship in Aberystwyth, Wales.
She retired from the Frostburg State College Library in 1985 as Head of Technical Processing and Associate Director after twenty four years of service. She was also active in the Faculty Senate for several terms and sat in many committees.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Zimmerman, The Director of the Library at Frostburg State College, in 2002. They were married on August 27, 1948 in Bethlehem, PA and enjoyed 55 years together. She was also preceded in death by her brother Lt. Col. Phillip E. Vooz Jr.
Survivors include three sons, Matthew Zimmerman, Esq., wife Susan, grand children, Spencer and Sarah of Westminster, MD., Andrew Zimmerman, RN wife Nayra, grand children Robert, Benjamin, and Emma, of Edgewood, MD., and Joseph C. Zimmerman, CPA, wife Clare, grand children Danny and Christopher of Stevensville, MD. There are also numerous nieces and nephews.
A native of the Lehigh Valley PA., area, she also lived in Florida, Georgia, and Frostburg, MD for 37 years. In 1994 Mary and John moved to Westminster in Carroll County, to relax and get away from the wintery weather. She had been a resident of Fairhaven in Sykesville since 2002.
Mary was very active in the League of Women Voters in Allegany County and also was an officer at the State level for the Maryland League of Women Voters. Her career in the league spanned several decades.
Known to be an excellent seamstress, she enjoyed creating clothing for herself and her daughters in law. She enjoyed travel, and with her husband visited Europe, Japan, China, and England, among other places during their retirement. She was also a voracious reader, and collected every known murder mystery by every identifiable writer, often swapping bagfuls of books with her friends. She was a member of St. Michael’s church while living in Frostburg
At her direction, there will be no viewing. A private memorial service is planned in the near future with interment along with her husband in the family plot in Leechburg, PA.
