Mary R. Topper, 81, of Emmitsburg, MD died Thursday, February 20, 2014 at Gettysburg Hospital in Gettysburg, PA. Born September 8, 1932 in Emmitsburg, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Mary Topper Miller. She was the wife of Donald F. Topper, Sr., who died June 29, 2002.
Mary was a Purchasing Agent for more than 20 years at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, retiring in 1998. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Emmitsburg, and the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She was past president of the VFW Post 6658 Auxiliary and was a member of the Francis X. Elder American Legion Post 121. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and helping her community.
Surviving are daughters, Sherry Topper Cain and husband Brendan of Hyattsville, and Maria Topper of Emmitsburg; sons, Donald Topper, Jr. and wife Diane of Towson, and Gary Topper and wife Ruth of Gettysburg, PA; siblings, Dora “Skip” Knott and husband Joe, Eugene Miller and wife Pat, Patrick Miller and wife Ruth Ann, all of Thurmont, R. Louise Orndorff and husband Clarence, and Gerald “Butch” Miller, all of Emmitsburg; grandchildren, Ciaran, Timothy, and Mary Cain, Kelly and James Topper, and Seth, Rachel, and Joshua Topper; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by siblings, Regis Miller, Mary Genevieve Miller, Adele Jensen, Anna “Jo” Little, Donald Miller, Sr., James Miller, Bernard “Duke” Miller, Theresa Jensen, Irene “Dink” Wantz, and Kenneth Miller.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, February 24, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Emmitsburg, with the Rev. Stephen Trzecieski, C.M. as celebrant. Interment will follow at New St. Joseph Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Sunday at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St., Emmitsburg, MD, with a Wake Service & Rosary at 7:30 p.m.
