Mary Jane Cheeks, 86, of Westminster, Maryland died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at the Carroll Hospital Center.
Born September 8, 1932 in Baltimore, Maryland she was the daughter of the late John Edward Curtis and Sophia Jane (Franklin) Curtis. She was the wife of 46 years to Dr. Sherrill Calvin Cheeks.
Mary Jane was a graduate of Western Maryland College now McDaniel College in Westminster with B.A. degree and M.S. degree in Counseling. She worked as an administrative consultant and mental health counselor for many years in the Westminster area. She worked for over 15 years as a department/administrative medical secretary with The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. She was a member of the American Health Counselors Association, Mental Health Association of MD, Mental Health Associates Association, American Association of University Women, American Heart Association Nutrition Committee, American Association for Counseling and Development, and a life member of Carroll County General Hospital Women’s Auxiliary. Mary Jane was a devout Catholic and communicant of St. John Catholic Church in Westminster.
She is survived by a son, Joseph A. Guzinski and significant other, Karen Bakewell of Alexandria, VA; daughter, Mary Ellen “Meg” Henline and husband Gary of Westminster, MD; step-daughters, Patricia Cheeks and husband Steven Weaver of Broadway, VA, Ann Cheeks of Staunton, VA, and Kathryn Cheeks and husband Cole Stitler of Stanardsville, VA; grandchildren, Zachary Weaver, Elizabeth O’Connell, Claire and Lauren Guzinski, Bryan and Rachael Ringgold, Connor and Logan Grimes.
She was predeceased by her sister, Grace Curtis Petty.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 17, 2018 at St. John Catholic Church, 43 Monroe St., Westminster with Father Mark S. Bialek as celebrant. A private burial will follow in Meadow Branch Cemetery in Westminster. The family will receive friends at MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 91 Willis Street, Westminster, from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, December 16th.
